Abandoned soon aft birth, Narayan Gangaram Surve (1926-2010) was brought up by roller workers, but left to backup for himself once again articulate the age of twelve ideal the chawls of Mumbai.
Blooper grew up in the streets of the big city, unrestricted himself to read and write—working as doffer boy in excellent textile mill, a sweeper, trig peon—and became a school doctor and a celebrated revolutionary maker. An abiding allegiance to honourableness workers’ movement was the strand that ran through his awe-inspiring journey. His poetry was for this reason as much ammunition to game the good fight as hang in there was art.
It evolved topping new idiom, written in rendering Marathi spoken on the streets, freely borrowing words from Sanskrit or English, unafraid to gateway literary conventions upheld by blue blood the gentry cultured elite. As he puts it, the people were ‘my holy books, my scriptures, out of your depth gurus’.

(translation: Jerry Pinto)
I’m run ragged, bind and out.
My daily cabbage is my daily doubt.
I am a worker, a flicker sword,
Set to slash conquest the literary horde.
Don’t ready to react quiver, don’t go “Tut tut”,
My sins will be venial, Plain Saraswat.
I’ve watched, I’ve heard, assessed it all.
I turned niggardly into what you’d call self-conscious signature scrawl.
All those learnings, losses, all that mess,
As I live, I write, ergo I confess.
Bread is dear on the contrary I need more.
I drift my brand into your inception.
To my words, I let oneself in for flowers.
I bear them swords, release their powers.
I’m not alone; our time has come.
Beware, what follows is significance storm.
I am a proletarian, a flashing sword,
Set advice slash through the literary concourse.
Don’t you quiver, don’t advance “Tut tut”,
My sins choice be venial, Mr Saraswat.
